Let's take a look at the speed of change these days...

  • INFORMATION: One week’s worth of NY Times newspaper contains more information than a person could access in a lifetime in the 18th century.

  • ENGLISH LANGUAGE:  Has over 540,000 words (5 times what existed in the 1600's when Shakespeare wrote his works)

  • JOBS: top 10 “in-demand” jobs of 2010 did not exist in 2004

  • JOB TENURE: 1 in 4 workers have been with their current employer less than 1 year; 1 in 2 less than 5 years with their current employer

Change is:

  • Sudden

  • Exponential

  • Constant

  • (and often times scary)

Robert B. Reich says, "Companies that can’t change the way that they think about change won’t be able to change the way they compete. Companies that can’t change in this new environment can’t play in this new economy."

The same holds true for you. If you can't, won't or don't change the way that you think about change, you won't be able to compete in today's economy.

v How to keep up

How can one human being keep up with constant, exponential change? It comes down to VALUE. Look at it this way...

Do you remember the "change agents" that companies brought into their organizations in the past? They were given the positional authority to make changes and help the company do things cheaper, faster and better. This pushed the company toward linear (extrinsic) improvement. They would cut costs, question current practices, and apply new technology. Then, they would use command and control techniques to force these changes into the organization (usually without much buy-in from the folks who had to implement these changes. This approach to change was mechanical, limited, out-of-touch, and point-to-point.

Change today cannot only be about changing EXTRINSIC "things" because "things" keep changing and you couldn't keep up. Today's change must be about the INTRINSIC!!  It must be about focusing on the genius of human beings... YOUR genius.

v Focus on the Intrinsic

Og Mandino writes:

"A mulberry leaf touched with the genius of man becomes silk.

"A field of clay touched with the genius of man becomes a castle.

"A cypress tree touched with the genius of man becomes a shrine.

"A cut of sheep's hair touched with the genius of man becomes raiment for a king.

"If it is possible for leaves and clay and wood and hair to have their value multiplied a hundred, yea a thousandfold by man, cannot I do the same with the clay which bears my name?

Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold."

Your genius and your brilliance...

that is what makes exponential growth possible!!

v Exponential Change

So, how do you make exponential growth possible?  Change your focus... your mindset.

I've found four (4) general options for change/growth...

  1. Change/Growth Resistor: You can recognize yourself or others as change resistors if you hear "We're just fine." "Let's get back to the basics." "That seems too risky." or "That's the way we've always done it."

  2. Change/Growth Reactor: These are the folks who are not part of the change but simply react to it. They take no responsibility for the change. They simply handle it and cope with it. They are usually one (or more) steps behind and may at times feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or out of control.

  3. Change/Growth Agent: As we discussed earlier, these are the people who create change, manage change, and direct change. They are always looking for the faster, cheaper, better ways of doing things. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing. These folks are necessary and often times effective, but their impact is limited to only linear growth.

  4. Change/Growth Master: The growth master focuses on the intrinsic when it comes to change. The growth master is...

    • Disciplined about growth, but focuses on agility.

    • Doesn't try to simply cut costs, but focuses on increasing value

    • Don't simply rely on logic and practical matters to make decisions, but focus on adaptability and using their intuition to anticipate change

    • Doesn't focus on the details and specifics, but focuses on preparedness.

    • Doesn’t depend on positional authority, but focuses on great ideas, powerful visions, and courage for exponential change.

By becoming a growth master, you are able to create exponential change. Why? Because as you lead change, as you model growth, others will amplify it.

YOU FOCUS ON GROWING YOU, not simply changing "things"!!

When you focus on changing, manipulating, handling THINGS, you are only going to affect linear (extrinsic) growth.

When you focus on growing you, expanding your mind, discerning value, and understanding how you think, you are able to participate in exponential change / growth.

When you focus on growing others, expanding their abilities and helping them understand how they think, you are not just participating in exponential growth, but facilitating it.

Og Mandino says it this way:

"Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.

"I am liken to a grain of wheat which faces one of three futures. The wheat can be placed in a sack and dumped in a stall until it is fed to swine. Or it can be ground to flour and made into bread. Or it can be placed in the earth and allowed to grow until its golden head divides and produces a thousand grains from the one.

"I am liken to a grain of wheat with one difference. The wheat cannot choose whether it be fed to swine ground for bread, or planted to multiply. I have a choice and I will not let my life be fed to swine nor will I let it be ground under the rocks of failure and despair to be broken open and devoured by the will of others."

So, what has it been with your life?

  • Are you avoiding growth? Have you chosen to be systemically fed to swine?

  • Are you looking for tips, techniques and knowledge to improve... extrinsically being ground into flour and baked affecting the lives of a few?

  • Or are you growing your ability to impact the lives of others... intrinsically being planted, to grow, and to multiply your value?

v What Next?

In these uncertain financial times ask yourself these questions:

  1. Are you a) living in fear or b) living in faith?

  2. Are you focusing on a) solving problems or b) finding opportunities?

  3. Are you looking to a) survive or b) thrive and grow?

  4. Are you a) cutting costs and focused on the dollars or b) investing in the people around you?

  5. Are you a) overwhelmed with fear or b) overjoyed with hope and possibility?

Did you pick more a's or b's? If you watch a lot of news, you probably picked a lot of a's.

I've spoken with quite a few people who have lost their jobs recently. In these cases, your mind has a tendency to focus on the a's... to try to solve YOUR problem. But the way to get paid is to add value, not simply to your life, but to the lives of others.

Focus on adding INTRINSIC value to the lives of others.

You will, then, be a change/growth master... you will, then, be invaluable in these challenging times.

If you would like to learn how to add intrinsic value to your world, I'd like to help.

I can not only teach you about all three classes of value but also how to grow and expand your mind-set.

Neuro-axiology is the answer. It isn't a rehashed old technique dressed up in the fashions of today. Neuro-axiology is a blend of the latest discoveries in cognitive neuroscience (how your brain processes thought) and axiology (the mathematically based study of human value and human value judgments). It is a quantum leap ahead in the science of personal growth and development.

It not only teaches you the theories and ideas behind value; it shows you how to make real, lasting changes in the way that you think so that you can implement these theories and bring about exponential growth... not only in you but also in others.

You can continue to use last century's methods and processes to try to accomplish this century's change and growth... and with time and a lot of effort, using the compass may be able to keep up with the speed of change and get you to where you need to go.

OR, you can use this century's technology and reach your destination more accurately and quickly enabling you to take the direct path toward understanding and implementing exponential change and growth.

Speaking of Change

and Growth

- Pericles

"Be the change you want to see in the world."

- Mahatma Gandi

"Change is the essence of life. Be willing to surrender what you are for what you could become."

- Unknown

"We are all faced with a series of great opportunities - brilliantly disguised as insoluble problems."

- John W. Gardner

"Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts."

- Unknown

"Do you want my one-word secret of happiness? It's growth - mental, financial, you name it."

- Harold S. Green

"The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership."

 - Harvey S. Firestone

"Nothing is lost upon a man who is bent upon growth; nothing wasted on one who is always preparing for life. By keeping eyes, mind, and heart open to nature, men, books, experience, and what he gathers, serves him at unexpected moments, in unforeseen."

 - Hamilton Wright Mabie

"We pay a heavy price for our fear of failure. It is a powerful obstacle to growth. It assures the progressive narrowing of the personality and prevents exploration and experimentation. There is no learning without some difficulty and fumbling."

 - John W. Gardner

"Changing things solves problems. But, the real sign of humanity is in seeking opportunities... finding the greater good that lies beyond the problem."
