“Upgrading Your Computer”

| No, this newsletter isn’t about your Mac or PC or other electronic device. The computer that I’m referring to is the one between your ears.
It’s the one that is with you 24 hours/day, every day of the year, even when the power is out. Your brain IS your computer.
So, here is today’s question… “When was the last time you upgraded your personal operating system?”

Most folks will say things like “I just took a course in communication last year.” or “I took a class in project management last week.” or “I attended a professional association meeting and learned a new skill.” These types of education and knowledge are all good things, but they usually don’t impact your operating system.
Education and knowledge are more like software programs that run on top of your operating system. Have you ever acquired great knowledge, believed in a wonderful plan or idea and then failed to take action or follow through over time? When we fail to take action, we typically say that it was the program that didn’t work. We blame the software package.
I’d like you to consider another perspective. Have you ever purchased a software program, taken it home and installed it only to realize that it didn’t run properly? We tend to think that the software is broken. Sometimes we install programs and they partially work but then crash when we attempt certain commands like printing, for instance. Again we tend to initially think that the software program must have bugs in it.
| What if the program is written perfectly for a Mac and you try to run it on a PC? What if the program is flawless and runs perfectly on Windows 7 and you try to run it on Windows XP or DOS (you remember DOS, don’t you?) The program isn’t going to function, right?
The same type of problems may be happening to your “computer”. You may have certain areas of your brain that are still running on DOS. Other areas of your brain may be running Apple’s X Lion operating system.

You may spend a lot of time, energy and money updating your programs (i.e. knowledge, education, competencies and skills) but if you’re trying to run these new programs on an old, outdated or faulty operating system, your results are not going to be as good as you had hoped.
How much time, energy and money have you spent on upgrading your operating system? Have you taken courses that teach you how to think better, how to make better decisions, how to utilize your unique operating systems most effectively?
If you are frustrated with where you are in your career, your relationships, or your health, why not try a different approach?
